Atomo’s birthday party

He is the new addition to the feline houshold and was Atomo’s birthday gift from Yumi (toy cat, see pic). The new watermelon shaped food bowl attracted quite some attention. The only problem was the candle … I had to remove it within a second or so or Atomo was going to burn his whiskers! That’s what happened to Luisa when she was 6-month-old-kitten. I lit candles one night and Luisa couldn’t resist but check them out from upclose. As a result she moved a bit clumsily over the following months due to navigation problems. Did you know that cats use their whiskers for balance and to find their way around in the dark? Pretty cool, huhh! Dubai, Jewel at the Arabian Gulf

Filed under: Dazzling Dubai — ricky @ 5:09 pm

viaje_mayo_2007-278.jpgBounded by the crystal clear waters of the Arabian Gulf on the one side and a blistering desert on the other, Dubai proves to be the exotic insider travel destination of the moment. And being apparently so far off the beaten track makes it even more exciting.

Over the last few years Dubai airport has propelled itself to the position of international hub for connecting flights and the multicultural mix of races and colors leaves no doubt about that. The most striking experience at Dubai airport was to see groups of Arab women in their burkas i.e. traditional gowns, veils covering their faces. Upon taking a closer look, however, I could spot expensive gold jewelry underneath the black rims of their every-inch-of-arm-skin-covering black sleeves, and their big brown eyes were skillfully made up in shades of Chanel and Dior. Flashy purses designed by Gucci or Prada made the contrast between traditional conservatism and up-to-date fashion statements even more evident.

I’m glad I caught a glimpse of Islam’s modern female worshippers at the airport cause in the city they are almost non-existent. While wandering around in downtown Dubai, what was most striking was the absence of women, Arab women I mean. I saw a few black women who seemed to be living there, and a handful of female Western tourists, but other than that it was all men. The staff at the exchange offices was male and so were the cabbies on the water taxis that take businessmen, shoppers and travelers to the other side of the river, to the souqs. And that’s where I was going. Guess what - all shopkeepers and salespeople there were male too!!
