Cat Planet

Filed under: Life with Felines — ricky @ 2:48 pm

pedigree.JPGpedigree_animal_planet.JPGThis is Pedigree and he likes watching the Animal Planet (a popular US TV channel)! With his shiny black fur he looks like a naughty little devil, but I hear he’s cuddly with his foster mom&dad. I got these pics from a reader, as well as the following link, check it out http://www.catster.com/ and create a webpage for your kitty!

Gotta think outside the box

Filed under: So Japanese — ricky @ 2:40 pm

watermelon_square.jpgSeveral dozens of square watermelons were neatly wrapped and packed into boxes yesterday on Shikoku island, and that was the official kickoff for the square watermelon season. Originally contrived in order to save space in the fridge, 800 suikas-in-the-box are being shipped to metropolitan areas all over Japan. Prices range from 17,000 yen to 25,000 yen. Hmm … just wondering whether they taste any different from round watermelons? Any feedback please from somebody who has actually tried these forbidden fruits. Forbidden for my wallet that is, or - as a friend put it - might as well buy a bigger fridge and fit the round watermelons nicely and neatly!

Culinary Dubai

Filed under: Dazzling Dubai — ricky @ 7:47 pm

viaje_mayo_2007-350.jpgviaje_mayo_2007-347.jpgThese days the culinary scene in Dubai is highly competitive with world class restaurants popping up all over New Dubai, usually located in one of the many new resorts. My personal favorite was Tangine whose interior design resembles an enchanting yet rustic fortress in the Sahara desert. Tangine, a stew that usually contains vegetables and lamb or any other kind of meat except pork, is the model dish of Moroccan cuisine. Appetizers from this North African kingdom are an enticing mixture between ripe olives, chickpeas, marinated eggplants and lusciously scented spices and herbs (see picture). Another restaurant that left me impressed was Bice at the Jumeirah Hilton, and Italian restaurant with outstanding cuisine and superb service. I had a green salad so fresh it tasted like “just picked from the organic backyard” and a seasoning so authentic I could hardly believe I was thousands of miles away from Italy. The lamb chops were nice’n'juicy and the seafood soup was incredible. And I - you guessed it - was stuffed! The original Bice is in Manhattan and the atmosphere was VERY NY. Packed at dinnertime.

Dubai Jumeirah Beach

Filed under: Dazzling Dubai — ricky @ 6:58 pm

viaje_mayo_2007-368.jpgviaje_mayo_2007-380.jpgviaje_mayo_2007-397.jpgThe best part of the trip was cruising around in the city in a cab and seeing the incredible array of recently erected or yet-to-be completed multystory buildings. Dozens and dozens of stylish skyscrapers, one after another, a feast for the eyes for city slickers and everybody who appreciates sophisticated architecture. The masterpiece is the sail shaped Burj-al-Arab, in English Arab Tower, built on an artificial island and at present the only 7-star-hotel in the world. Its interior design is an ultramodern mixing and matching of bright colors that reminded me of Versace’s flashy designs. But the aformentioned actually is building a hotel in his own name and design, and so is Gucci. From the top of the Burj-al-Arab we can see The Palm Jumeirah, The Palm Jebel Ali and The Palm Deira, all artificial islands with state of the art infrastructure where Dubai’s elite is already purchasing second homes so to ensure a spot in the most exclusive, most glamorous, most stupendous residential area in the world. Another man-made island is The World - 300 luxury islands shaped like countries and continents. To make a long story short: Dubai’s wealth is impressive.

Dubai Souq

Filed under: Dazzling Dubai — ricky @ 3:30 pm

clip_image0031.jpgviaje_mayo_2007-299.jpg(Continued from “Jewel at the Arabian Gulf)

The Souqs are the bustling old markets of Dubai, extensive shopping streets covered by wooden arcades, where basically four types of goods are sold: perfumes and scented oils that bring memories of 1001 nights, spices and herbs, gold, and typical clothes. I say “typical” and not “traditional” so not to suggest to the reader that these shops only sell burkas. Far from it. The first thing I was offered upon entering a shop was - believe it or not - a bellydance outfit!! I was good sports and tried it on, well, the skirt at least. It was WAY TOO short and a short skirt was the last thing I needed in a town where most people wore long pants and long-sleeved shirts, in spite of the 40+ degrees. The next outfit the vendor had in mind for me was a burka, the black cloth-like gown that covers a woman from head to toe. At this point I said to myself, why not, when will I ever have the chance again to wear Muslim garment. The result was hilarious (see pic). I eventually went for a simple white cotton pants suit, perfect for the glistening heat.

Summer in New York

Filed under: Soup Curry — ricky @ 4:30 pm

picante.jpgMonday and Friday is “Summer in New York” day at Picante. It is the name of a soup and the latest addition to the already flashy menu. It made me perspire and ask for water refills in the stylish stainless steel watercup. I have to mention though that the outside temperature at lunchtime was 28 degrees centigrades. The menu is extensive and contains items like roast spice chicken or lamb with vegetables. Eggplant, bacon or avocado are just a few of the toppings. Every day there are two choices of soup. I had the above mentioned - summer in NY, with chicken leg and vegetables, and although it tasted more like summer in Sapporo I have to say it was fantastic! The soup had the perfect consistency, not light and not rich, just right in between. As for the piquancy, I ordered 4 on a scale of 5 and it could have been hotter for my personal taste. Meal sizes are regular and come with a dish of seasoned rice. The interior design is stylish South East Asian, and today’s music was a selection of Indonesian string instruments. Crowded at lunchtime but the friendly staff tries hard to satisfy customers’ needs. Note: The price goes up with the spice, i.e. level 1 and 2 are free of charge, for level 3 you pay 100 yen, for 4 it’s 200 and for 5 you will be charged 300 yen. In case you wondered about the origin of “picante”: it means “spicy” in Spanish. Picante, North 13, West 3, phone 011-737 1600. From 850 yen

Why we don’t need a baby hatch

Filed under: News & Events — ricky @ 3:49 pm

A hospital in the southern Kumamoto prefecture installed a facility last month where parents can anonymously drop off infants.  Main purpose of the so-called “baby hatch” - in Japanese konotori no yurikago (stork cradle) - is to save babies’ lives who are otherwise in danger of being abandoned in less civilized ways.  The hospital got its inspiration from a similar system in Germany and plans to put deposited babies up for adoption.

Do we need a baby hatch?  Advocates may argue that in a society where school fees are hair-raising and the general cost of living is high, many young parents do not have the financial resources to bring up a child.  I say that in a country where contraception is readily available and abortion is legal there is no need for a baby hatch.  Such a facility encourages young people to act irresponsibly by sending out the message that it is okay to drop off infants in case they become a burden.  The focus should be on informing young people about preventive options, rather than afterward fixing.  It is on teachers, parents and all other educators to guide young people into adulthood towards a meaningful life.
