Standing in line for hours is something Tokyoites seem to do readily and easily. They are used to making lines in front of restaurants, theaters, and, you guessed it, whenever a brand item is being launched in Japan. Just remember the hords of shoppers camping around the LV building when it was inaugurated a few years ago. This time, however, it was not a luxury good that hit the shelves in Tokyo but a rather low-key shopping bag made of used cotton at the very reasonable price of 2000 yen. The carry-all, however, claims to be much more than a cheap bag, stating consciously “I’m not a plastic bag”. 3000 people were standing, sitting and lying in line since the hours of dusk of the previous day with the purpose of snatching one of the fashionable totes from the UK. Designer Anya Hindmarch’s initial mission was to produce an environment-friendly shopping bag, the original idea being to refuse the use of plastic bags for transportation of groceries and rather bringing your own bag. BYOB, lol. Hindmarch set off an unexpected fashion frenzy and it seems that this craze, like many others, will be carried to excess here in trend-conscious Japan. Unfortunate for several hundred of Tokyo’s trendsetters who had been waiting in line overnight, the totes were sold out by the time it was their turn. Actually the demand in Tokyo is so high that production in England can not keep up and - hard to believe but true - upcoming launches in Beijing, Shanghai and Jakarta were canceled!!! This for sure will not only guarantee the brand a spot in the hall of fame of fashion (”the bag that became famous overnight”) but also inflate sales prices. The I’m-not-a-plastic-bag cotton bag has been spotted on e-bay for 20 times the retail price. The bag would definitely not work for me. If you saw me grocery shopping, you’d know why. I go shopping when my XL fridge is empty, and I fill it up again from bottom to top. The bag was launched in Sapporo last Tuesday.
