These are the ugliest shoes mankind has seen since the launch of moon boots 30 or so years ago and yet they’re this summer’s� fast seller:� Crocs perforated rubber shoes in all colors of the rainbow.� Originally intended for the beach, camping and the likes, I’ve seen them on people strolling around in shopping malls or while running errands.� Yesterday I saw a pair of pink ones on a little girl and for the first time I thought they’re cute!� Then, this morning I spotted them on a young� woman and she had customized her orange Crocs with� decorations called “jibbitz” giving them a fashionable twist.� I thought that was pretty creative and I wanna see more of that.

Look at this:� I found clam shells at the beach with a hole in them!� At first I thought it was just weird but when I found the second one I figured that can’t be coincidence and I did some research.� Turns out that a creature called moon snail eats clams, mussels and oysters by wrapping its foot around its prey, suffocating� it and then drilling a hole in the shell with its tongue.� Wow, I had no idea!

It’s been a week since the Ishiya scandal was unearthed and walking through Sapporo Station hasn’t been feeling the same.� The stacks of Shiroi Koibito boxes that used to take up a good deal of space in every souvenir shop have all disappeared, and it feels kinda weird to not have the nicely blue-and-white wrapped� packets around.� Even though Ishiya chocolate is not my favorite (I prefer Royce) I do regret that they are gone and it can be said that Ishiya, having falsified expiration dates for over ten years (!) gives Hokkaido a bad name.� Their� longseller Shiroi Koibito (white lovers), a� sandwich type chocolate cookie,� used to be the number one souvenir for tourists visiting Sapporo, and I heard that in China they’re so popular that they’re falsifying them!� Well they will have to produce more now.� Just imagine, fake white lovers, hmm.� Good news for chocolate lovers:� kitkat orange & chocolat� has just been released.

Boy oh boy, what an O-Bon holiday!� First temperatures were soaring� as high as 36 and 37 degrees centigrades and, Hokkaido homes not being equipped with aircondition, the only relief was granted at the beach where the seawater� provided some cooling from the tropical condition in the city.� The shore, however, was a sea of seaweed (wakame), I� swear I’d� never seen so much wakame in my life and I have no idea where it came from!!� Dream Beach, for a change, lived up to its name, at dusk at least.� Look at the amazing sunset pics.� Shortly thereafter the O-Bon ghost came to me in the shape of a broken water pipe and my apartment was flooded!� For those of you who do not know the legend, you aren’t supposed� to swim at O-Bon cause a ghost might pull at your legs and drown you in the deep deep ocean.� In my case the water ghost just broke the pipe.� Beaches were closed immediately after O-Bon i.e. there are no lifeguards, no more banana boats for rent and no more wave runners.� Many Japanese people tell me that the summer is over, but how can it be over if we’re still at 30 degrees centigrades?� Can anybody enlighten me what’s the deal here?�

That’s what I call perfect timing:� After a week of muggy days and unbearable humidity we had perfect sunshine and blue skies just on time for our DLS beach party.� Hikaru and I made a “fine weather monk” (teru teru bozu) before the party and hung it out the window hoping and praying for a change of the adverse weather spell.� It miraculaously worked and we had a blast at the beach.� Brazilian chorizos were the most popular BBQ item and went like hot cakes, but the prime rib steaks, lamb chops, spare ribs and bonito were well-liked also!� And there was lots of beer of course.� Thanks everybody for showing up at Dream Beach and having a good time with us.� And here are the pics!

The Koshien high school baseball games are in full swing and just in case you didn’t know, high school baseball is a big deal in Japan, possibly bigger than professional baseball!� Tens of thousands of fans from the remotest areas, eager to� lend support to� their local teams travel all the way to Osaka to� spur and cheer on the grounds of the Hanshin Koshien Stadium.� I’m wondering whether this year’s games will be as heated and controversial as last year’s when the final game had to be repeated because the two teams,� having played� 15 innings, were still� tied.� Waseda Jitsugyo eventually took the trophy home, largely due to the talent and efforts of pitcher Yuki Saito whose habit of wiping off sweat with a blue� bandana earned him the nickname “Prince Handkerchief”, and unfortunate for many Hokkaido citizens who were hoping for a win of� Komadai Tomakomai.� Prince Handkerchief has since entered university and hence this year’s tournament has to do without him, and who knows, we may well have a new star with a new nickname by the end of next week when the final game� is held (August 22).� Hokkaido’s phat Tomakomai team is playing against Hiroshima today.

Having been� caught in one of the many rain showers of this hot & humid summer (my new nickname is “the rain queen”) I was relieved to be offered a dry towel by the attentive waiter.� Campbell’s is an individually owned soup curry eatery (as opposed to those run by large restaurant groups) and there’s no lunch set.� However, the menu consists of a� selection of interesting soup curries e.g. bacon tomato, chicken vegetable or even hamburger soup curry!� My order (lamb) contained a variety of veggies (pumpkin, onion, asparragus, carrot, potato, bean sprouts) and lamb of course, cut in thin slices.� The soup is a real soup (thin) and basically not very spicy (level 1-5).� I found the food at this funky/stylish place to have a uniquely Japanese taste and hence it’s popular with a Japanese crowd.� Opened last year.� Starts from 980 yen.　South 8, West 13.� Phone 011-532 1202

Here in Hokkaido, when we hear melon we think Yubari melon, the sweet oval-shaped treat that melts in your mouth and gives new meaning to the word cantaloupe.� A well-known fact for locals but not for most foreigners, Yubari’s population has shrunk from a flourishing post-war 100,000 to an alarming 10,000 and the city is in a state of bankruptcy.� � How did this happen?� Yubari had a thriving coal mining industry and when the mine was depleted, many people and with it its wealth, left to try their luck in another place.� On top of that,� the local government’s plans to revitalize the city’s economy with an ostentatious amusement park, a museum and other projects, all focusing on the Yubari melon as its theme, failed miserably.� � Two large companies stepped in this year, trying to assist the city in its struggle to recover.� Food giant Nestle launched� “Yubari melon kitkat” earlier this year, and with it came the donation of 10 Yen from every pack to the troubled city.� The nationwide Yomiuri newspaper on the other hand moved its fabulous annual fireworks festival from Sapporo’s Toyohira River to the deserted fields of Yubari in order to attract locals and travelers alike.� Date is this coming Saturday August 11.

After days of tough security talk at the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) earlier this week in the Philippines participants loosened up and showed their various talents in elaborate stage shows.� Japanese Foreign Minister Aso Taro’s parody of Billy’s Boot Camp received heavy applause and boisterous laughter.� Dressed in a samurai outfit, his face colored with several layers of make up, he imitated the popular fitness guru in a hilarious stage show.� Watch the video.� Other performances include the Philippines’ FM’s interpretation of a heartrending Spanish love song and Russia’s FM’s satire critizicing the ARF as being “blah blah blah”.� Condoleezza Rice’s representative hired professional artists to entertain the crowd with broadway tunes.� North Korea’s FM lived up to his nation’s policy and remained reclusive i.e. no stage show.� I found it very interesting how different countries handled the task of coming up with a stage show in different ways.� Look at the approaches from the US and Japan.� The US FM had a Broadway cast flown in whereas the J-FM decided to take things into his own hands and dress up in costume.� That is quite typical behavior.� American company meetings are often followed by professional stage shows.� On the other hand, Japanese people prefer improvised shows where the emphasis is on comedy and� colorful outfits rather than perfectionism.� I think the reason is that Japanese people are such perfectionists in their daily lives that when it’s time to unwind they just want to do or see something funny.
