Stress relief milk costs 5000 yen

Filed under: News & Events, So Japanese — ricky @ 6:48 pm

stressreliefmilk.jpgstress-relief-milk2.jpgThis week’s big news was the appointment of the new prime minister. Not surprisingly, Yasuo Fukuda emerged victorious. There were some quirky news in the dairy industry. The launch of stress relief milk dubbed “adult milk” was announced, aimed at highly competitive, highly stressed individuals. 5000 yen for 900 ml, five thousand yen ……………. I guess there are better, cheaper, ways to rid yourself of stress, e.g. buy a punchball and a pair of boxing gloves and box off your excessive energies (that’s what I did, highly effective, lol). Any other suggestions please on how to release stress?

Powerful: Sokochikara

Filed under: Soup Curry — ricky @ 3:29 pm

sokochikara.JPGThis is and has always been my favorite soup curry shop: Sokochikara Sri Lanka Soup Curry at the west entrance of Nakajima Park. I used to go there on a regular basis to get my dosage of spicy stuff. That was three, four years ago and at that time I lived at the east exit of Nakajima Park. I just had to cross the park to get to my favorite eatery, how convenient!! Ok, enough of nostalgia, lol, here are the facts: There are two types of soups (traditional and tomato/leek base) and ten kinds of choices as far as the main dish is concerned: chicken, lamb, pork, hamburger and vegetables only. They can each be ordered with additional servings of vegetables. Lunch is served from 11:30 to 3 PM and lunch starts from 780 yen. There’s a lunch set for 1000 yen that includes lassi and a salad. Sri Lanka curry even has its original beer! I had lamb soup curry (traditional base) and apart from the lamb it contained potatoes, eggplant, carrots and cabbage. As a topping I ordered the half-boiled egg, a real treat. You can choose how spicy you want your stuff on a scale from 1 to 100. 1 to 30 is mild, more than that will for sure make you perspire! South 11, West 6. Street car stop Nakajima Park. Phone 011-552 4900

Japan’s most popular pizza toppings

Filed under: So Japanese — ricky @ 7:29 pm

_piz_pho_50.jpg_piz_pho_51.jpgOkay so I had to try Pizza Hut’s most popular pizza toppings in Japan, cause they’re just too unusual to be true! You’d never had guessed … the two pizza top sellers are 1. mochi, mentai & potato 2. mochi & shrimp chili (ebi chili)! Now I like shrimp-chili with rice, but on top of bread it tastes a little strange. The tarako-potato stuff was a bit better although the mochis made my taste buds scream. Do we need a pizza police in Japan? Nope, for you can’t argue about taste. Was it worth the 3500 yen? Sure. Experience is priceless. Other weird pizza toppings: Korean purukogi, mayo Q and burger pizza.

Mes de la Patria y El Grito

Filed under: En Español — ricky @ 4:00 pm

¡Viva nuestra Independencia!” (mira la foto)

Shinzo Abe has stepped down

Filed under: News & Events — ricky @ 9:00 pm

abe2.jpgPM Abe has resigned and a heated discussion is going on about who’s next. I hope it’s not the manga-reading make up-wearing guy, you know who I mean. That would affect Japan’s reputation around the world and we def do not want that. Well, for now all we can do is wait and see … and hope!

Soy sauce on ice cream

Filed under: News & Events, So Japanese — ricky @ 4:47 pm

soysauce1.jpgJapanese people put soy sauce on everything from fish to fried foods and now even on ice cream! A small soy sauce producer from Gifu prefecture has come up with a soy-syrup to be put exclusively on the sweet frozen treat and has sold more than 6000 bottles this year, and demand is going up. Added to a scoop of vanilla ice cream it’s said to taste like caramel, and considering the elaborate production process - eight years of brewing in wooden barrels with sweet rice and starch syrup - it’s for sure worth a try!

Coffee News

Filed under: News & Events — ricky @ 4:31 pm

starbucks1.jpgJapan has a long and sophisticated tea tradition but in recent years coffee has become popular as well.  Starbucks is doing extremely well in Japan, and Tully’s also has a fair market share (doing much better in Tokyo than in Sapporo though).  Seems like they’re getting competition from burger giant McDonalds which simultaneously opened seven coffee shops dubbed McCafe a few days ago in Tokyo.  However, with prices less than half of what Starbucks, Excelsior and the likes charge,  the crowd is going to be quite different.  My guess is that McCafe is going to be popular with high school girls and twentysomethings, just like the original burger shops.  Talking about age groups, I’ve noticed that coffee to go is becoming increasingly popular with 40- and 50-somethings.  That’s a trend imported from the US although there it’s not age specific.  As of recently, Starbucks coffee is available at convenience stores (espresso, latte and caramel) and that for sure fuels the popularity of coffee-to-go.

Another political scandal shakes Japan

Filed under: News & Events — ricky @ 3:03 pm

matsuoka31.JPGakagi11.jpgendo1.jpgToday the third minister of agriculture in the Abe cabinet, Takehiko Endo, resigned amidst revelations of the misemployment of government subsidies, his actions being eerily similar to those of his two predecessors. Abe’s original choice, Matsuoka, committed suicide in May, and his successor, Akagi, was sacked after a series of gaffes and an embarrassing appearance in public with a huge band-aid covering half his face which he denied to comment on. It seems like “minister of agriculture” is becoming a synonym for slyness and dishonesty. Too bad for the scandal-ridden administration that promised to build a “beautiful nation”. Pictures: 1-Matsuoka who committed suicide 2-Akagi with brawl-patch 3-Endo who resigned today.

Again a new defense minister

Filed under: News & Events — ricky @ 7:09 pm

koike.jpgDo you remember Yuriko Koike? She is credited as the mastermind of Cool Biz in the summer of 2005. At that time she was the minister of environment in the Koizumi cabinet. Two years later, in July 2007, she became minister of defense under the Abe administration, only to be sacked less than two months later and in spite of the fact that she had just completed an official visit to the US and met with Condoleezza Rice for security talks! PM Abe has reshuffled his cabinet and inaugurated 12 new ministers earlier this week, keeping only 5 from the previous team. For a head of state it seems strange to change his mind so quickly and easily and Mr. Abe should once and for all stick with decisions he’s made or he’ll go down as the most erratic PM in Japanese history. New defense minister is Masahiko Komura. Picture: Previous defense minister Yuriko Koike with US secretary of defense Robert Gates during an honorary ceremony for her Aug. 8, 2007.
