Atomo needs diet

Filed under: Life with Felines — ricky @ 5:55 pm

oct2007-079.jpgThis morning I took Atomo to the vet so that he could get his first vaccine, an important step towards disease prevention. Read more. His weight turned out to be 5.5 kgs which means - Atomo must go on a diet!! So which one am I gonna put him on - Atkins, the Zone or the South Beach Diet? Or, rather than downsizing food portions, I’ll make him move more. But how do you do that with a cat that’s HYPERACTIVE already?! Oh, and Atomo is a calendar model now. He and many other amazing and once homeless felines (before Hiromi-san took them off the streets) did some awesome modeling. The veterinary clinic’s address is North 32, East 12 and the veterinarian is fluent in English, so, if you’re a foreigner with cats in Sapporo, or, if you’re a Japanese living with felines and live anywhere near that area, that’s the place to go. Phone # 011-773 8228, 011-721 8228

Dalai Lama in Japan

Filed under: News & Events — ricky @ 4:26 pm

dalailama1.jpgThe Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of Tibet, is currently on a 10-day stay in Japan and has visited Ise shrine as part of his esoteric tour. I’ve long been a fan of his teachings and he’s much better known in Western countries than here. The wave of spirituality hasn’t arrived yet in Japan and I’m wondering if it ever will. Click here for more info. During the peak of the esoteric movement in the US, two of my favorites were the teachings of Ramtha and Osho. They contain some useful tools and guides for life, and as long as you don’t get too caught up in them they’re nice to dedicate some time to I’d say. Just keep your feet on the ground! In the reading department, “The Secret” has been a bestseller in recent times, and it is available on DVD as well. What it claims though, is no secret: Think positive and good things will come to you, think negative and you’ll be miserable. I guess we all know that and we all have experienced similar situations in life.

New Chinese Restaurant at North 24

Filed under: News & Events — ricky @ 3:52 pm

There’s a new Chinese restaurant in the North 24 neighborhood and I highly recommend it.  The cook and all the staff are Chinese and hence the food is authentic.  I had hot& sour soup (sanraten), steamed vegetables with beef, and annin tofu.  The place is nice and clean, decorated with traditional Chinese paintings and scrolls.  Prices are reasonable and home or office delivery are available.  North 24, West 4, on top of the 100-yen-shop.  Phone 011-727-0626

arab_airbus.jpgExcess, multiplied: A Saudi Arabian billionaire has announced his plans to buy the world’s biggest airplane and have it equipped specifically for his exclusive needs. The Airbus A380 will possibly feature a movie theater, a gym, a jacuzzi and several bedrooms. Estimated cost of the luxury liner: over US-$ 320 million.

About cats getting used to each other

Filed under: Life with Felines — ricky @ 5:15 pm

sep_2007-011_3.JPGWho said cats don’t get used to each other? Look at this recent picture: Luisa and Atomo peacefully sharing a chair for a nap. When Atomo first joined our family, he was terrified of Luisa, but now he sees her like a big sister, teasing her non-stop, and they get along quite well.

Sweet news - and scandals

Filed under: News & Events — ricky @ 6:08 pm

j-candy3.jpgThe recent series of food scandals took us all by surprise. And we thought food in Japan was safe to eat! First Fujiya, then Meat Hope, our sacred Shiroi Koibito, Hinaidori Poultry, Akafuku and then Akafuku’s competitor. Now even Mr. Donut - or MisDo, as the Japanese say - has admitted to using old syrup in their “fruity milk” drink. Click here for more info on the recent food scandals. This article suggests that the confectioneries’ wrongdoings are going to linger in our memories longer than the meat scandals. I don’t agree. In my opinion, extending expiration dates on meat or labeling pork or even rabbit (!) as beef, is way more preoccupying. First of all rotten beef can make us seriously sick. Secondly, some people can’t eat pork because of their religious backgrounds. As for myself, I didn’t eat pork before coming to Japan because I thought it was unhealthy. In Japan pork has a much more positive image than in Western countries, but I’m still no big pork eater. What has stunned YOU more? The sweet scandals or the beefy ones? On another note, my favorite winter chocolates have just arrived in stores, and this year there’s a new flavor, raspberry. I asked around why Melty Kisses are available only in the winter season, and I got an interesting answer: Because in the summertime they’d melt!

Japan 91st in gender gap index

Filed under: News & Events — ricky @ 3:37 pm

equality1.jpgJapan ranks 91st in world gender equality according to a list of 128 countries published today by the World Economic Forum. This mirrors the huge gap that exists between men and women when it comes to opportunities in career/business and education. In the health sector there is more equality but generally speaking, Japan is a male-dominated society. As expected, Nordic countries like Sweden, Norway and Finland occupy the top spots. The US fell to 31st place, from 23rd last year. Click here for complete list.

Eco-bra aims at saving forests

Filed under: So Japanese — ricky @ 3:27 pm

chopsticksbra1.jpgOne of the things I’ve always loved about Japan is that every time I buy a boxed lunch, or even instant soup, I get a set of chopsticks with it. That is so convenient but of course it is not the greatest thing when thinking about our woods. According to statistics 25 million pairs of disposable chopsticks are thrown out each year, most of them imported from China. Underwear maker Triumph Lingerie has come up with a stylish bra called the “My Chopsticks Bra” that can hold two reusable sets of chopsticks! One cup represents a miso soup bowl, the other a rice bowl, the compact chopsticks are held by side pouches. The bra’s mission is to give eco-conscious, fashion-conscious women a tool to help save the planet. And I already know what my next Halloween outfit is going to look like.
