Midsummer gift-giving in Japan

Filed under: Sapporo Summer, So Japanese — ricky @ 7:18 pm

punica1.JPGpomegranate.JPGI just got really interested in The Face Shop after receiving a fabulous fresh fruit punica mask! Currently the most popular cosmetics and skin care brand in Korea. There are twelve franchise stores in Japan - none in Sapporo unfortunately. And if third time is a charm then my new face mask makes me lucky I guess or beautiful … which is better, I don’t know! I also just got pomegranate body butter from The Body Shop and Starbucks frozen shake at the same time! The Face Shop calls its product PUNICA, The Body Shop POMEGRANATE and Starbucks uses the Japanese word ZAKURO which sounds pretty cool. Whatever the word is, it reminds me of all the juicy pomegranate shakes I was sipping in paradisiac Goa, India. So now, instead of drinking it, I put it on my face and body and dream of Indian sunsets. In any case, July was definitely mid-summer gift season for me, called O-Chugen in Japanese. I can’t even count all the presents I’ve received! Thank you folks, I love gifts!!!

New hangout at North 11

Filed under: Soup Curry — ricky @ 4:13 pm

palm.JPGNot easy to find, but worth the quest: Chelsea “curry gym” at North 11. The colorful place is hidden on a patio-like side street and once you hear the reggae tunes you’ll know you’re there. There’s an extensive menu including seafood, pork and sausages, and piquancy levels range from one to ten (extra charge from level five). I had a chicken soup curry lunch set and very interestingly there’s tomato juice among the beverage choices. The broth was tasty although not the typical soup curry flavor. It had a distinctive taste of chicken soup. North 11, West 3. Phone 011-757 3751

Don’t tease the catfish

Filed under: News & Events — ricky @ 1:48 pm

catfish2.JPGThe catfish dithered and quivered last night just after midnight. Legend has it that deep under Japan’s soil a giant catfish is buried, and everytime it gets upset it moves and causes earthquakes up here on the surface. Neat tale! In my six years in Japan I perceived it as the strongest temblor so far. My kingsize bed was shaking and rattling even though I live in a low-rise building on the second floor. Last time I experienced a similar situation was roughly three years ago. At that time I lived on the seventh floor of a slim tower. The quake felt about the same, so I assume yesterday’s was stronger. All I can say is: Don’t tease the catfish!

What a day!

Filed under: Sapporo Summer — ricky @ 7:55 pm

My day started out with me slipping and falling on my matutinal cycling tour.  My bike slid over a water drain amid heavy rain and the next thing I knew I was lying on the sidewalk, my white pants ripped, bloodstained, and blood all over my elbows too.  A kind man offered first-aid by handing me a pack of clean tissues.  Made my day.  I took my ripped pants as an excuse to head to Zara and get a pair of new slacks.  I saw a pair of purple ones (great color) only to learn from the salesclerk that my size was not available, and had never been actually.  Hmmm …  I eventually found a pair that fit me, only thing is - they’re pink!  It’s been ages since I’ve worn pink, lol.  Funny, in the US I was an M-size, here in Japan I’m L or XL and as you may know, the largest size in most stores is M.  Frustrating sometimes!  Then at work I got three gifts, a pink face-scrub-cloth with a dragonfly design, aromatic lavender oil from Furano and my absolutely favorite Royce chocolates!!  Thank you Naoko, Maiko and Yayoi, I really appreciate it.  Had a bad start today but a fabulous end.

Luisa’s B-day

Filed under: Life with Felines — ricky @ 3:39 pm

dsc04567.JPGToday is Luisa’s birthday. Cute little frisky Luisa-chan is twelve years old! Hard to believe. I still remember the day when I heard someone knock at my bungalow door in Mexico City. I opened and there was Elizabeth, standing in the patio with something white and furry in her hands. That little furball was Luisa. “Do you want her?” Liz asked. Of course I wanted her! She was two months old at that time and adorable. Now at twelve she’s a full-fledged grown-up kitty with quite some experience. Born in Mexico City, she once came along to the beach in Cancun with me. It was a bit hot for her though. I don’t blame her, she’s one quarter Persian after all! When we arrived in Hokkaido the first thing Luisa did was grow a thick, fluffy winter fur. Yeah, in winter she’s even cuter! Luisa loves summer though. On sunny days she usually spends hours sitting on the window sill, enjoying the sun and watching the birds too!

A fervent spark

Filed under: Soup Curry — ricky @ 6:57 pm

dsc04853.JPGdsc04857.JPGFinally! A soup curry restaurant around Sapporo Station that’s worth its salt, or chili, for that matter. Spark opened end of last month and offers great flavor and nice presentation in a stylish environment. At first I wasn’t too happy that Luna Mite - the previous coffee shop - closed down, but Spark makes up for it all the way. Forget Hiri Hiri, it’s crap compared to Spark. I had a low-fat chicken soup curry dubbed “slim curry”, the taste was superb, light but not plain, low-fat but not bland. Nice combination of ingredients. Only drawback: There’s no soup oomori. Spark also has branches in Odori, Susukino and East Ward. North 7, West 6. Phone # 011-726-3115. 11:00 - 23:00 (And they don’t close at 10. Yeah!)

Peace and quiet returned to Sapporo

Filed under: News & Events — ricky @ 6:24 pm

tooth1.JPGThe presidents and delegates have returned to their countries and peace and quiet rules again in Sapporo. I had wisdom tooth surgery this morning. My lower left wisdom tooth was not growing straight and so the gums were cut open and the tooth extracted with big tweezers - ouch! Just kidding. The surgery was far from being painful. My dentist should be in the Guinness book of records for painfree dental care. And he is fluent in English as well which is very helpful when it comes to expressions like “odontology” or “antibiotics”! After surgery I went to the conveyor belt sushi next to Daimaru (uugh, kaitenzushi sounds much tastier), had some salmon and tuna (loaded with antioxidants –> healing power!) and was about to slam down my prescription painkillers with green tea. In the same instant the waitress handed me a cold glass of water. I was amazed by her mindfulness! I started teaching immediately after that, no swelling on my face, no pain, nice job!

Stopover on the way to the beach

Filed under: Soup Curry — ricky @ 5:02 pm

dsc04698.JPGdsc04699.JPGdsc04701.JPGIt’s on the way to Dream Beach and it stays open late - two traits that make it a favorite on my list of soup curry eateries: Shorin in Asabu. I dropped in last Sunday morning for a spicy breakfast and it was the perfect preparation for a hot day at the beach. Chef Ken is very friendly and on top of that a great cook. The soup is rich and has the perfect consistency. I had lamb this time, excellent choice. Great atmosphere. Shorin Asabu, Phone # 011-707-2622

G-8 Summit & the missing first ladies

Filed under: News & Events — ricky @ 4:30 pm

g8wives.JPGThe wives of G-8 leaders shop at a market near Lake Toya. The G-8 summit talks are in full swing and the city is full of police officers. Boy, I’ve never seen so many cops in my life, not even in US border towns!! They seem to be standing at every street corner all over the city, sometimes in pairs or larger groups, a deterring method aimed at wannabe-terrorists. The main issues of the summit are global warming, the oil shock and the food crisis. Last Saturday about 5,000 activists demonstrated in Odori park against globalization and the effect it has on widening the gap between rich and poor. Compared with most other countries Japan still is a perfect society where incomes are distributed relatively evenly, i.e. not many rich, not many poor. Demographic experts say the gap is widening even in Japan. I hope not because I appreciate this country for exactly that, and the safety of course and the wonderful people who go out of their way to help others. On another note, of all G-8 nations, namely Japan, USA, Canada, Russia, France, Germany, England and Italy, two first ladies are missing at this year’s summit - and one first gentleman. The ladies are, you guessed it, the French and Italian presidential spouses. Not surprising at all. Both ladies live princess-lifestyles and may feel a little out of place at an eco-summit in rural Japan without limousines, makeup-artists and fancy restaurants. Japan or Hokkaido, for that matter, may not be as sophisticated as France or Italy, but that’s exactly what I like about it, its simplicity. The simple life! (Ever seen that reality TV show?!) As far as the husband of German chancellor Mrs. Merkel is concerned - I believe he has other reasons for not attending the summit: He doesn’t seem to be keen on kimono-folding and tea ceremony with a bunch of ladies …
