Raf, Yoshie and I went to Sapporini a couple of days ago. We were having a business dinner and what a surprise, next to our table were Izumi and her husband, celebrating Izumi’s birthday! Like I always say, Sapporo is a small town. Or more like a big city that feels like a small town. That’s what makes it so special. Izumi looked happy and beautiful (see pics) and she confessed she couldn’t eat everything and took home several dishes in a doggy bag - common practice in the US, but most restaurants in Sapporo don’t provide that kind of service. Well, Sapporini does, and that’s not the only unique feature about this low-key, nevertheless amazing restaurant. Hidden behind an inconspicious door on the backside of Sapporo Factory is Sapporo’s only authentic Italian restaurant. The place is, in real Italian countryside tradition, small, cozy with lots of wood and candlelight. Restaurants in Japan - and all other stores and shops - are usually bathed in bright lights which can be quite uncomfortable for foreigners who usually prefer a cozy atmosphere. Sapporini’s lights are dim and, most importantly, the food is fantastic. The menu changes every week and out of the dishes I have tried I recommend the green salad with raw ham and tuna, the rare duck in balsamic dressing with potatoes and spinach, the seafood casserole and the veal pasta. Actually everything I have tried has been excellent and … you’ll be surprised how large the portions are, in real Italian style! Sapporini, North 2, East 7. 011-241-5800. Reservation two weeks in advance is recommended.
