Puppy prison

Filed under: Animal Rights — RICKY @ 6:42 pm

I was running errands around Odori and dropped in at Tokyu Hands earlier this week. I knew they sold pet goods on the top floor and went to check out cat travel carrier bags and toys. To my dismay I realized they not only sell pet items, but pets as well. The puppies are locked up in tiny cages without ventilation, and all of them were lying apathetically on the bare floor of their miserable cages. Two of the puppies were so big that they had to curl their bodies to even fit into their prison cell. Now that I know that Tokyo Hands tortures animals they won’t get another cent from me, or yen, for that matter.

From Texas to Louisiana in one night

Filed under: News & Events — RICKY @ 6:35 pm

Selena, Queen of Tejano (right) and Jennifer Lopez (left) impersonating her New Orleans style bar Famous Door celebrated its tenth anniversary last weekend and as a semi-regular customer I couldn’t miss that! Wow, I had never seen that place so full, they had a jazz live band playing well into the morning hours and lots of benches everywhere to accommodate everyone. From Louisiana it’s only a short drive to Texas, namely across the border, and earlier that night we - me and two friends - had been to a Caribbean bar although on that night it was 100 % Tejano music! Never heard of that genre? Tejano is Spanish for “Texan” and the tunes are usually performed by Mexican immigrants in Texas, hence the name. Needless to say, the lyrics are in Spanish. Tejano, in sound and rhythm, resembles Norteña music from the northern Mexican provinces, and the biggest star the genre had ever seen - Selena - was assassinated at the age of 23. Selena had reached huge popularity among Latin communities and in the year of her death, 1995, she was recording a crossover album that would almost certainly have made her an international star, comparable to Gloria Estefan, only bigger, for Selena sang better, looked better and had loads of charisma. Quirky detail: Selena was not a native Spanish speaker but learned the language through her music and by the time of her death she was fluent. Two years after Selena’s murder her life was made into a movie and another star was born: Jennifer Lopez, who was chosen to impersonate the Tejano star mostly because of their strikingly similar hourglass figures. Personally I like Selena a lot more than Lopez and I still listen to her music every now and then. By the way - I discussed cultural differences regarding beauty ideals with some students in a recent lesson and learned that Jennifer Lopez is considered fat in Japan! In the US she was voted most beautiful woman of the year (don’t remember the year but it was not so long ago). And I just got another little culture shock.

Secret meeting of billionaires

Filed under: News & Events — RICKY @ 12:50 pm

Oprah Winfrey, America’s wealthiest woman The world’s richest, among them Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Oprah Winfrey and David Rockefeller held a secret meeting earlier this month at Rockefeller University in NYC. When word got out about the meeting the billionaires declared the main issue had been how to combat the current recession and “how they could use philanthropy to shape the world”. Then why in the world was the meeting secret? Why would anyone want to hide their good deeds? Is this a new kind of modesty, or are they playing cat and mouse with us?

Luisa’s playtime

Luisa is more playful than ever and in spite of all the new toys she has her
all-time-favorite is an old, ripped red string.

Crazy kitty

Filed under: Life with Felines — RICKY @ 5:43 pm

Zafiro seizing my ironing board
Every time I give Atomo a shot of anitbiotics Zafiro comes mewing and begging - he must be thinking it’s real yummy. When it was his turn, however, to get a shot of immune-system-boosting supplements he grimaced in disgust. Crazy kitty.

Alternative masks

Filed under: So Japanese — RICKY @ 8:37 pm

More effective than surgical masks: Military masks and dust masks. Making a virtue out of necessity - surgical masks are basically sold out - these two folks, spotted today in Osaka, found alternatives.

Exageración total

Beautiful? OMG

Filed under: So Japanese — RICKY @ 7:27 pm

Oh my god, that’s all I can say about the diet pages in Japanese fashion magazines. The girls are ridiculously thin, weighing 40 kgs or below, that’s about half my weight. Then, when I run over the pages of these magazines I realize that the models are just as thin. Come to think of it, REAL young women in Japan tend to be extremely thin as well, and I guess the super-skinny girls in the magazines are their idols or “role models”. Why are Japanese women so obsessed with being skinny, can anybody tell me?? I know for sure that this trend doesn’t come from the US, and I remember very well that me and my friends used to compare curves, not bones. We wanted to look sexy, not stick skinny. As you can see, anorexia is a far bigger problem in Japan than obesity, and “sexy” is not in the Japanese vocabulary. Whether that is a blessing or a curse, that’s entirely up to you. Brains over body I guess. In any case - these girls had better eat some (plenty) of the desserts I mentioned yesterday.

North rabbit’s tail

Filed under: So Japanese — RICKY @ 7:26 pm

More quirky sweets: Ikuko brought “Kita no usagi no shippo” (north rabbit’s tail) cookies back from Hakodate. If that’s what a rabbit’s tail tastes it’s pretty good I’d say! Flower field farm’s fresh caramels are diversifying and are currently available in mango, strawberry, banana and yubari melon flavors (thanks Ayaka!). And, you may have noticed, choco-banana desserts are currently all the rage. Nostalgic and conservative - harbingers of the up and coming decade? What do you think? Let me know OK.
