Zafiro’s big day

Filed under: Life with Felines — RICKY @ 7:25 pm

Zafiro wearing an e-collar after surgery. He hated it and I relieved him of the burden the following morning. Finally: Peace and quiet has returned to my home. Zafiro - ten months old and in puberty so to speak - had started to harrass Luisa and my poor girl was spending her days hissing and being upset. So, I decided to have Zafiro fixed. The veterinarian performed another blood test and, again, advised me against surgery, saying that the anesthesia might affect Zafiro’s health because he was still carrying the leukemia virus in his body. I insisted, asking the vet to anesthesize him the shortest time possible. I then signed a paper that I would take full responsibility if something unexpected happened. Well, to make a long story short, Zafiro handled the surgery pretty well and I went back later that day to pick him up. He immediately devoured a can of food and was frisky and curious as usual. The next morning a toy I had sent here through family in the US arrived and that really distracted Zafiro from licking his wounds! Peace and quiet has once again returned to my home.

That was our Movie Night

Filed under: News & Events — RICKY @ 8:24 pm

It was a super fun night with lots of giggling, chuckling and some loud laughter. Mamma Mia turned out to be a big hit with our students, thanks everybody for attending. Not only was the story funny and entertaining - young bride in search of her real father - but the setting on a Greek island was picturesque, and the soundtrack (ABBA) amazing. Timeless music that makes you feel good. Not to mention the cast: Outstanding performance by Meryl Streep - she is skilled in acting, dancing and singing - and British stars Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth. What is great about Meryl Streep is her versatility. I mean remember her in “The Devil Wears Prada” where she played a stylish and unscrupulous fashion editor, or other flicks where she was the intellectual blonde. And now she’s that middle-aged hippie-mom in Mamma Mia and as credible as ever. Incredible, really. The one scene they could have done better was when Meryl sings “The Winner Takes It All” to Pierce before entering the church. Her expressions didn’t match the lyrics. What I personally enjoyed most were the fun & glamorous disco outfits from the 70’s! I need to stock up on these and throw a few retro parties. Don’t miss the bonus tracks where the three ladies dance and sing together with the three gentlemen - all dressed from head to toe in disco fever outfits!

Victoria has a secret

Filed under: Animal Rights, News & Events — RICKY @ 6:21 pm

The Body Shop just got competition: Victoria’s Secret has arrived in Japan! Traditionally known for its fashionable lingerie creations the company launched a highly successful line of body mists in the 1990’s. They - as well as body butter in various scents - are now available at the Sapporo Drugstore (Sapporo Station). Feels nostalgic. Since then Victoria’s Secret has developed an entire skincare line in the US. None of their products are tested on animals.

Filed under: News & Events, So Japanese — RICKY @ 8:02 pm

With their black limousine-type cars, elegant drivers and fluorescent heart-logo, they add a stylish touch to the streets of Sapporo: MK Taxis from Kyoto. And what’s great is that the base fee is only 550 yen. So - catch one if you can!

A touch of color

Filed under: Sapporo Summer, Soup Curry — RICKY @ 2:56 pm

I know it’s summer in Japan when they start selling the unbeatable suika-bar (watermelon ice cream bar). And I know it’s summer in Sapporo when I get an insatiable appetite for spicy soup curry. The peak of this food fad is over and these days many restaurants are diversifying, offering different kinds of soup, to keep customers happy. I found a new soup curry restaurant today, well new for me because actually it has been there since last summer. I was initially attracted by the vivid color (bright orange) and stylish design of the eatery (see pictures) and especially by the open storefront, and decided to have a bite to eat. I ordered chicken/vegetable soup curry, spicy level 4 (on a scale from 1 to 5) in a tomato based soup. Other choices were sweet shrimp or pork broth. It tasted different from traditional soup curry, a bit like Kokoro (N18, W4) where the food is also tomato-based, and it was not spicy enough so next time I’ll go for 5! Nice place, friendly service, good food. Goonies S5, W9.

Cruelty-free cosmetics

Filed under: Animal Rights, I recommend — RICKY @ 8:23 pm

I wanted the lipstick and ended up with the mascara. It’s summertime and I’ve been working on my suntan, trying to spend as much time as possible outdoors and assisting a bit with products like the body&leg shine although that - like many of my favorite products - has been discontinued. That seems to be somewhat of a curse. Everytime I get attached to a product, the next thing I know is that it’s gone and there I go, frantically looking for a replacement. To give you an example, a long long time ago my favorite lipstick - Clinique’s lilac bronze - disappeared from the shelves and I’ve been looking for a substitute ever since. Adding the fact that I’ve become what one would call a conscious consumer, I always do research about a brand’s animal testing policy before I shop. To make a long story short, I wouldn’t want to wear a lipstick, or anything for that matter, that’s been tested on animals. I mean why do cosmetics have to be tested on animals to begin with? It’s complete nonsense. Among the big&glamorous companies the only one that apparently doesn’t test on animals is Christian Dior, which was kind of a positive surprise. I have tried several of their products and they were mostly excellent. On top of that their design is among the most appealing ones in the cosmetics industry in my opinion, they offer some of the best shades and color combinations, and have a hot hand at choosing models for their various campaigns. To make a long story short, I ran out of lipstick the other day and headed straight to the Dior counter. I originally wanted the shade Monica Bellucci is wearing in their latest campaign but eventually opted for a different shade of beige. Here’s a list of other companies that do not test on animals although caution is required: Some of the companies that are listed as cruelty-free actually belong to a corporate group where the mother company does experiment with animals, such as Origins and MAC that belong to Estee Lauder which in turn operates animal testing laboratories in Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan. Or the Body Shop that labels its products as “against animal testing” but actually belongs to L’Oreal which extensively experiments with animals. Btw, I was impressed with Dior’s generosity: I bought a lipstick and got a bag full of samples including the mascara that’s advertised in the picture, eye cream, a moisturizer, a repair complex and a perfume!

It’s summertime

Filed under: Life with Felines, Sapporo Summer — RICKY @ 7:05 pm

This has been the nicest day so far this year with blue skies and temperatures in the high twenties, and young Japanese women donning their full-body summer gears: parasols, ray sleeves, gloves and in some cases sun visors. This is also the start of the sea urchin season and I heard that especially in and near Otaru bay they’re abundant. And this is exactly one of the things I enjoy most here in Hokkaido, the plentifulness of mouthwatering seafood at incredibly low cost. Look at the picture: I bought three fresh scallops for a mere 200 yen! Zafiro got his share too, as usual.

Kitten found in mailbox

Filed under: Animal Rights, Life with Felines — RICKY @ 7:49 pm

This lovely kitten was found in a Boston mailbox last Saturday. Somebody had stuffed it through the slot where it plunged several feet below but apparently had a soft landing since it was unharmed. The lucky foundling, named Postina, is approximately eight weeks old, weighs one kilogram and is up for adoption. I say lucky because she is certainly better off now than with somebody who doesn’t want or can’t keep her. Pets are among the most vulnerable victims of this recession, it is just too easy to abandon them in spite of strict US laws that are designed to protect animals. In Massachussets for example, where the kitten was dropped, animal abandonment is a crime punishable by up to a $2,500 fine and 5 years in prison. Look at the picture and at the almost human look in Postina’s eyes. It’s like she’s saying, whoever did this to me, I’m better off now! Zafiro was about this size when I found him last fall and I just remembered how cute and petite he was!!

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is fur-free

Filed under: Animal Rights, News & Events — RICKY @ 6:45 pm

This is excellent: French first lady and style icon Carla Bruni-Sarkozy wrote a letter to PETA in which she declared that she is 100% fur-free.
These are her words: “I do not wear, buy, or own fur …. Every designer who kindly lends me clothes for public appearances can tell you that I do not accept … fur pieces, even when they’re only a small part of the outfit.” With this powerful message from the fashion capital I do hope all designers eventually drop fur as did Donna Karan earlier this year and as many others did in the past, ie Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger and Vivienne Westwood, to name just a few. Bottom line, wearing fur is cruel, old-fashioned and completely outdated in the third millenium.
