We had six months of winter, ten days of spring and all of a sudden temperatures are soaring and it's summer. The usual pattern in Hokkaido and now that it's warm and the flowers are blooming, the long, cold, dark winter is past and forgotten!
Sapporo's official tree is the lilac tree, and it's in full bloom right now. Odori Park is abundant with the fragrant bushlike trees, and you can find them along many streets and roads all over the city. If you ride your bicycle along Shinkawa Street from North 18 to Sapporo Station, circling Hokkaido University, you can experience the strong scent of the lilacs.
Tulips, although not a symbol of this city, can also be found in many gardens and parks at this time of the year.
